Holiday Wellness: Tips to Stay Positive, Calm, and Resilient

The holiday season is often painted as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. But for many, it can bring challenges like loneliness, stress, or emotional overwhelm. Whether you’re facing the hustle of the season or feeling isolated, finding ways to maintain your mental and emotional well-being is essential. If you are hosting this year like we are, and preparing for a lovely time, that's great. However, that doesn't always mean it will go to plan. It often doesn't. But we believe that everything that happens, is according to plan, all the ups and downs, laughs and giggles. I particularly enjoy playing board games this time of year. All the old favs. But at some point, I will sit quietly and listen to music or go for a walk with others. I have found through the years not to change my entire routine, and to incorporate habits that keep me grounded and feeling good, like going for a walk. Others can join in. Let’s explore practical tips and tricks to help you stay positive, calm, and resilient during this time of year.

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s okay to not feel merry and bright all the time. The holidays can evoke a range of emotions, from nostalgia to sadness. Give yourself permission to feel these emotions without judgment. Journaling or talking to a trusted friend can help you process and release these feelings.

2. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude can be a powerful antidote to negative emotions. Each day, take a moment to reflect on three things you’re grateful for. These don’t have to be grand—even small joys like a warm cup of tea or a kind gesture from a stranger can make a difference.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

The holidays often come with pressure to create perfect moments. Release the need for perfection and embrace the beauty of imperfection. Set boundaries for your time and energy, and focus on what truly matters to you.

4. Embrace Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness can help you stay grounded amid the chaos. Try a simple breathing exercise: inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale for four counts. Repeat this for a few minutes to calm your mind. You can also explore guided meditations to deepen your practice.

5. Connect with Nature

Even a brief walk outdoors can boost your mood. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the season. Whether it’s the crunch of leaves underfoot or the sparkle of frost on the ground, connecting with nature can be a soothing balm for the soul.

6. Build a Support System

If you’re feeling lonely, reach out to friends, family, or community groups. Virtual events or holiday gatherings can provide a sense of connection. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re struggling—there’s strength in asking for support.

7. Create Solo Holiday Rituals

If you’re spending the holidays alone, make it special for yourself. Watch your favorite holiday movie, cook a festive meal, or start a creative project. Writing a letter to your future self about your hopes and dreams can also be a meaningful activity.

8. Give Back

Acts of kindness can create a sense of purpose and joy. Consider volunteering at a local shelter, donating to a cause you care about, or simply sending a thoughtful message to someone in need of encouragement.

9. Limit Social Media

Social media can amplify feelings of inadequacy during the holidays. Remember that most people share only their highlights, not their struggles. Set boundaries for your screen time and focus on your own journey.

10. Remember, “This Too Shall Pass”

The challenges of the season are temporary. Reflect on times in your life when you’ve overcome difficulties, and remind yourself of your resilience. Keep the mantra “This too shall pass” close to your heart as a source of hope and strength.

Closing Thoughts

The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. By embracing self-care, gratitude, and connection, you can navigate the season with grace and resilience. Take things one day at a time, and know that brighter days are ahead.
