Have you ever felt trapped in your mind — stuck in cycles of worry, fear, or emotional heaviness — even when life on the outside seems perfectly fine? One of the most overlooked keys to mental and emotional liberation may lie not in your thinking, but in your energy system: your chakras.

In a recent episode of The Inquisitive Wren Podcast, I had the joy of diving deep into this topic with energy healer and author Lisa Erikson, whose work has been transformative in helping people understand the link between chakra imbalances and mental health.

How I Discovered the Power of Chakras

Early in my spiritual journey I stumbled upon the concept of chakras. I was seeking ways to connect min, body, soul, beyond what traditional psychology could offer. Through meditation and subtle energy work, I discovered that tuning into my chakra system allowed me to connect more deeply with Spirit and my own intuitive wisdom.

In fact, learning to sense, open, and align my chakras was one of the ways I first strengthened my mediumship and energy communication, and that experience changed my life.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed how imbalances in the chakras can subtly (and sometimes dramatically) impact one’s mental state. Anxiety, depression, confusion, low self-esteem, these are not always “just” psychological. They are often energetically rooted.

Beyond the Basics: There Are 12 Chakras — Not 7

Most discussions about chakras focus on the traditional 7, and for good reason, they are core to our physical and emotional wellbeing:

  1. Root – safety, stability

  2. Sacral – creativity, sexuality

  3. Solar Plexus – personal power

  4. Heart – love, compassion

  5. Throat – communication, expression

  6. Third Eye – intuition, insight

  7. Crown – spiritual connection

But there’s more. Many advanced energy practitioners and metaphysical teachers speak of a 12-chakra system, which incorporates 5 additional higher and transpersonal chakras. These chakras help connect us to greater spiritual awareness, universal consciousness, and collective healing.

Most importantly, the 12th chakra which is sometimes called the Divine Gateway or Universal Consciousness Chakra is believed to be the point where your individual consciousness merges with divine energy.

When activated, this chakra allows one to access profound inner freedom, spiritual wisdom, and an expanded sense of self — beyond ego, beyond limitation.

As Lisa Erikson shared on the podcast:

“When you understand that your energy body extends beyond your physical body, you begin to see that healing is a multidimensional process. Working with the higher chakras allows you to release old identity patterns and move into greater alignment with your true essence.”

Why Chakras Hold the Key to Mental Freedom

1️⃣ Energy Precedes Emotion

Your mental state is not just created by your thoughts, it is also shaped by the flow of subtle energy in your body.
When chakras are blocked or imbalanced, this energy stagnates, creating feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, or confusion.

2️⃣ Alignment Brings Clarity

When the chakras are aligned and flowing, your mind naturally becomes more spacious, clear, and receptive.
Many meditation traditions use chakra alignment practices precisely because they help quiet mental chatter and foster deep presence.

3️⃣ Spiritual Integration Heals Trauma

The higher chakras (8–12) provide a spiritual context for life’s challenges.
They allow us to view difficult experiences from the lens of soul growth — which is profoundly healing for the mind and nervous system. When we integrate the spiritual dimensions of our being, mental freedom becomes a natural state.

A Simple Exercise to Begin

If you’re new to chakra work, here’s a beautiful and accessible practice you can start today:

Chakra Light Alignment Meditation

  1. Sit comfortably with your spine straight.

  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

  3. Visualise a column of light running through your body — from the earth below your feet to the sky above.

  4. One by one, focus on each chakra, starting at the root and moving upward:

    • Visualise each chakra as a sphere of light.

    • Breathe into it, and imagine it spinning smoothly and radiating brightly.

    • When you reach the 7th chakra, move into the 8th to 12th:

      • 8th (above head): Soul Star — soul wisdom

      • 9th: Spirit Chakra — spiritual gifts

      • 10th: Earth Connection Chakra — global consciousness

      • 11th: Galactic Chakra — unity with the cosmos

      • 12th: Divine Gateway — connection with Source

  5. Spend extra time at the 12th chakra, imagining pure golden light pouring into your system, clearing mental and emotional residue.

  6. Finish by grounding your energy into the Earth.
